Thanks Billoo, and intriguing to see the echo of a year past!
I heard the other day that the 25th December was actually the birth of Mithras, and was later adopted as the birth of Christ. I thus suggest the new greeting: Merry Mithras. Or, as a feast day, that should be Merry Mithrasmas ... best not attempted with a lisp...

Yes, I've heard that as well, Jacky (mainly by muslims who think that that discredits the religion in some way, it has to be said). Gosh, sorry to sound so serious.

I think there have always been parallels anyway (dionysus?) . I guess some see this as 'borrowing' and others as a universal truths that repeat themselves now and then.

did i tell you I've seen the foundations of a mithras temple in London? Bit disappointing to see that it's dwarfed by some massive finance building! Peter Brown in 'the world of late antiquity' has an interesting few pages on the emergence of the 'eastern' religions into the 'west'.

Take care,

b.

Temple of Mammon overpowers Temple of Mithras ... ain't that the way! Will have a look at Peter Brown's book some time, as the 'fluidity' of religious formation is intriguing - of the various constructions, conflations, and creations... best wishes from the summer side of the planet ... j...
